Bio

Julene and Hal met in a dance class. We spent many years as teaching assistants with several dance instructors. In 2016, we began teaching dance classes at the local community colleges, along with private and group classes. We enjoy the opportunity to teach different styles of dance and all the friends we have made along the way. Our motto is “Dance like no one is watching! Because no one is watching. They’re all staring at their phones.”

Getting Started

Julene grew up on a farm in southwest Iowa, then moved to Montana, where she added Round Dancing and Ballroom dancing to her repertoire. After several years of being an instructor’s assistant, she met Hal. Together we danced up a storm. In 2016 the instructor retired and we filled the vacancy, teaching dance through the community college adult continuing education program. Hal grew up in Montana, where a friend convinced him to take dance lessons, as there was a shortage of leads on the dance floor. Together they enjoy teaching the basics of social dancing and all the friends we have made along the way. And of course, we kick up our heels any chance we get.

Hal and Julene met at a dance class in 2010. Julene had been dancing for many years and Hal had been dancing 5 years. They hit it off and 18 months later they were married. They go to dances and dance classes whenever they can which many times was almost every day of the week.

Dance Classes

After 8 years as junior instructors and substitute instructors for Roz K, Hal and Julene accepted the roll of dance instructor in 2016 teaching at the local collage. They continued a tradition of teaching (Jitterbug, Salsa, Two-Step, Waltz and Pattern) classes.

In 2021 Hal retired and they moved to Julene’s home town of Clarinda, Iowa where they now teach at 2 collages (IWCC and NWTS) along with the local fitness center (LIED) and private lessons.

The duo have danced competitions including fund raising competitions including the Glen Miller contest.

Dancing competition is another way to enjoy dancing while picking up tips from other great dancers.

More Dancing

Square Dancing, Line Dancing, Round Dancing and Contra Dancing all keep us active.

Julene is a seasoned “Plus” Square dancer. She is always on the lookout to find another Square or Round dance.

Hal is working toward his “Plus” objective. He also enjoys Round dancing.

Other Activities

Working around the house. Julene helping with the underground sprinkler is one of her many talents.

Although Hal is retired he keeps himself busy with tasks around the house and making his home a smart home. Hal’s hobbies include an extensive model railroad, large movie collection, wood working projects and of course dancing.
