Jitterbug AKA Single Swing is a variation of East Coast Swing or Jive that replaces the triple step portion of the figure with a with a single sidestep.

It is assumed that the name came from dancers “jittering like bugs.” The word itself is a synonym for the terms “lindy” or “lindy hop.” The terms referred to the same dance. Another less-popular name for the dance was “swing.” Both terms “jitterbug” and “lindy” were popular in the 30s.

A bit about Jitterbug:

Jitterbug swing is a regimented dance (step-step-rock-replace). Jitterbug is NOT Country Swing. Country Swing is a more freestyle dance targeting those that want to spin and twirl at high speeds and is many times seen as an out of control swing dance.

Jitterbug Single Swing is the 40’s popular swing. For those of you that want to dance in the swing era then this is the starting point. Jitterbug is the simple (step-step-rock-replace) dance with many fun spins, twirls and turns. Jitterbug is the pre-course to East Coast Swing that is danced to a bit slower music with a (double_step-double_step-rock-replace). From Jitterbug and East Coast Swing come Lindy, Charleston and Balboa. If you want to start into the popular nation wide Swing Dancing or Swing Dance at the local dance hall then Jitterbug is the starting dance.
