It is assumed that the name came from dancers “jittering like bugs.” The word itself is a synonym for the terms “lindy” or “lindy hop.” The terms referred to the same dance. Another less-popular name for the dance was “swing.” Both terms “jitterbug” and “lindy” were popular in the 30s.

Jitterbug is the pre-course to East Coast Swing that is danced to a bit slower music with a (double_step-double_step-rock-replace).
